Is Pacifica Vegan and Cruelty-Free? All You Want to Know

Natural cosmetics, skincare items, and fragrances are what Pacifica Beauty is famous for.

The brand initially offered eco-friendly candles and home fragrances, but it later branched out into the beauty sector and now offers goods in a variety of categories, including hair care.

The objectives of Pacifica have slightly changed over time in order to offer us environmentally friendly, all-natural cosmetics that are just as effective as those with added chemicals. They use natural ingredients like coconut water, rose water, kale, kombucha, sweet almond oil, and even modern ones like crystals in place of harsh chemicals.

Naturally, not a single one of these ingredients comes from animals.

Pacifica is Cruelty-Free

According to Pacifica, neither they nor anyone else on their behalf conducts animal testing on their goods or ingredients. Additionally, none of their suppliers engage in animal testing or, when required by law, permit it to be done on their behalf. And lastly, neither their goods nor those of any other company are offered for sale in shops in mainland China or any other nation that might demand animal testing.

By our standards, we would consider Pacifica will be cruelty-free.

“We are and have always been completely vegan and animal cruelty-free. We’ve been doing it for more than 20 years, and it’s who we are. We are certified by PETA, and we do not support any animal testing anywhere in the world, nor do we use animal products or by-products.”

What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?

According to Pacifica, they do not sell their goods in mainland China’s retail establishments, so they are exempt from the requirement to conduct animal testing.

As of May 1, 2021, certain imported, common cosmetics may be exempt from animal testing under certain circumstances. But in 2022, the majority of imported cosmetics will still be subject to the legal requirement of animal testing.

Cruelty-Free Policies

Take note that the term “Cruelty-Free” has no defined meaning in law.’ It can mean various things to various people. However, the term “cruelty-free” generally implies no animal testing. At any stage of the product development process, no animal testing is done on the ingredients, formulation, or final product.

When evaluating a company’s cruelty-free policy, ethical elephant always uses our Cruelty-Free Checklist. This guarantees that neither the company itself nor any of its suppliers or other third parties ever tested animals.

Keep in mind that the terms “vegan” and “cruelty-free” don’t always mean the same thing.

What is Pacifica?

Pacifica Makeup – Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Clean, vegan & cruelty free
  • Affordable & accessible
  • Wide range of products including makeup, skincare, fragrances, and haircare
  • Returns accepted up to 30 days after purchase
  • Widely available online and at retailers like Target

Cons

Where Are Pacifica’s Products Made?

When I asked Pacifica where their products are manufactured and they told me:

“The finest ingredients from around the world are used to create our products, which are produced in the USA. Only a few of our palettes, sample bag items, and eye pencils are an exception. The nation of origin is always noted on our packaging. Every facility we work with satisfies our strict requirements.”

I checked a few of their products on their website and only some say “Made in USA.” Some of their other products, however, do not state where they were made. It’s impossible to determine where something was made, sadly, unless you have it in front of you. I wish Pacifica would make this information available online as well as on the packaging.

Also, note that cosmetics made in Animal testing is not necessary in China. Only cosmetics that are imported and sold in physical stores in mainland according to China’s laws on animal testing, must be tested on animals.

Ethical Mica Mining Policy

Mineral called mica is added to cosmetics to create a shimmery effect. However, the mining of natural mica has been connected to child labor and violations of human rights.

We have no way of knowing whether the company’s mica is obtained ethically without the use of child or forced labor unless it discloses its policy on mica mining.

So I asked Pacifica if their mica is ethically sourced without the use of child labor and they responded by stating,

“In fact, mica is present in many of our color products because we use natural minerals. We demand that the suppliers of our mica have a definite policy against child labor and use humane mining techniques.”

Recycling Program

The Recycling Program on Pacifica demonstrates another element of their audience-appealing strategy that emphasizes the environment.

To put it simply, they send you a pre-paid shipping label to which you can add up to eight items that will be recycled and made into toothbrushes and razors. You get 100 loyalty points in return, which you can use to get things for nothing.

However, keep in mind that there are some restrictions:

  • There is a limit of 100 loyalty points per month;
  • Furthermore, US residents are the only ones who can get free shipping.

Despite this, it’s still a commendable initiative for anyone wishing to prevent the landfilling of plastic.
